The core is typically filled with non-combustible materials like mineral wool, while intumescent seals around the edges expand dramatically when heated, sealing off deadly smoke and gases.

Critical components include a self-closing mechanism, usually via a coordinated door closer, and positive latching to ensure the door stays fully closed. All hardware must be listed for use with the specific door assembly. Fire doors are rigorously tested in accordance with standards (e.g., UL, BS, EN) and are given a rating in minutes, such as 20, 60, 90, or 180, indicating their proven resistance duration.

Their application is mandated by building codes in stairwells, corridors separating different occupancy areas, mechanical rooms, and other high-risk locations. It is crucial that fire doors are never propped open, as this completely negates their life-saving function. Proper installation, regular inspection, and maintenance are essential to ensure they perform as designed in an emergency.

1. When the fire is in the initial stage, the tightness and proper installation of the fire door can control the supply of oxygen in the room. Effectively, the fire control is in the initial stage.
