These doors operate on two key principles: integrity and insulation. Integrity means the door assembly, including the door leaf, frame, seals, and hardware, remains intact without developing gaps or holes. Insulation ensures the unexposed side does not reach critically high temperatures. This is achieved through specialized construction. The core is typically filled with non-combustible materials like mineral wool, while intumescent seals around the edges expand dramatically when heated, sealing off deadly smoke and gases.

Critical components include a self-closing mechanism, usually via a coordinated door closer, and positive latching to ensure the door stays fully closed. All hardware must be listed for use with the specific door assembly.
